Biographical sketch
Henry Abram Unruh was born on February 8, 1917, in Barwenkova, south Russia to the distinguished Abraham H. (1878–1961) and Katharina (Toews) (1876–1963) Unruh. In 1925 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in Winkler, Manitoba. At the age of eighteen he began his higher education studies at Tabor College and Bethel College, graduating in 1940 with a B.A. in biology and bacteriology.
He married Esther Mary Kroeker of Winkler on December 29, 1940 and they were blessed with five children. He began his work for the military as first lieutenant in July 1941 in charge of the military hospital laboratory in Kingston, Ontario until August 1945. In September he entered Queen’s University in Kingston, graduating as a medical doctor in June of 1951. He finished his first year of internship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, when he moved his family to Kamloops, B.C. He retired in 1985 and passed away in Kamloops on June 30, 1988. Services were held at the First Baptist church in Kamloops.

This collection contains one item which was written by Henry’s wife Esther Mary (Kroeker) Unruh after his death. It recounts Henry’s life in Canada through recollections, stories and photocopied pictures.

This item was produced by Henry’s wife, Esther, in July 1993 and then donated to the archives on September 9, 1993.
