Biographical sketch
David Schellenberg was born on July 12, 1861, to David Schellenberg (1832–1911) and Aganetha Neufeld (1835–1919) in the Molotschna colony, south Russia. He went to school in the village school until the age of fifteen. In 1878, he immigrated to Canada with the rest of the family. They were among the founding families of the village of Neuanlage on the West Reserve, along the Post Road. On May 28, 1882, David Schellenberg was baptised. On November 15, 1885, he married Anna Friesen, who was born on April 28, 1865, to Peter Friesen (1840–1919) and Anna Penner (1842–1919). Together they had eleven children. David Schellenberg died September 8, 1955.
Scope and content
The material in this collection consists of a translation of David Schellenberg’s autobiography and two letters written by Schellenberg in 1950. They reveal Schellenberg’s life as a pioneer on the West Reserve. The ink is very light and therefore extremely difficult to read.
