Biographical sketch
Peter A. Riediger was born on May 30, 1872, in Rosenort, south Russia to Abraham (1846–1919) and Katharina (Kroeker) (1845–1913) Riediger. At the age of six the family moved to Fischau. On June 7, 1892, he joined the Mennonite church in Lichtenau.
He married Katherina Penner (1874–1957) on March 7, 1894. Fifteen children were born to this couple. In the first years they lived in Lindenau until 1906, when they sold their farm and prepared to move to Klinock, Neu Samara. After the auction sale, three robbers came and stole their money.
In 1907 Peter was joined the Mennonite Brethren church. In 1926, the entire family moved to Canada where they first lived near Stavely, Alberta. Seven years later they moved to Vauxhall where they live for fourteen years. Finally in 1948, they bought a house in Coaldale where they retired. In the last years of his life he dealt with blindness. In 1969, he fell ill and passed away on December 12, 1969.
Scope and content
The materials in this collection consist of a diary accounting the trip to Canada from Russia in 1926 and a copy of a documents accounting the visits of the Czar to Molotschna in 1818. The materials have been translated into English.
Custodial history
The materials in this collection consist of two articles written by Peter A. Rediger and translated by his daughter Margaret from Coaldale, Alberta in 1997. The translated documents were donated to the archives on January 19, 1998.
