Heinrich Regehr (1898–1991)

1954–1985.
92 cm textual material, and 3 tapes.

Biographical sketch

Heinrich Jacob Regehr was born on July 3, 1898 in Annovka, Crimea, the youngest of a blended family of ten children. Before he completed grade school, his family moved to Siberia. Here he became a teacher at age 16, a career which was interrupted three years later by World War One and the Russian Revolution.

He married Katherine Siemens on November 19, 1922. Together with their first-born they left Russia in 1925, spent several months in Mexico and arrived in Saskatchewan in 1926. After farming for two years, he began a fifteen-year teaching position at the Herbert Bible School. Following a two-year interlude in Vancouver, he resumed his Bible teaching profession, first at the Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna Manitoba, then at the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg, and finally for seventeen years as radio teacher with Licht des Evangeliums, now Mennonite Brethren Communications. They moved to Clearbrook British Columbia where he taught a Wednesday Bible Study Class for many years and wrote a column called the “Frage-Kasten” for the Mennonitische Rundschau. He also did some itinerant preaching.

Heinrich Regehr died on November 23, 1991 at Clearbrook, British Columbia.
Taken from an obituary written by son, John Regehr.

Scope and content

The Heinrich Regehr fonds consists predominantly of textual materials, typewritten and in the German language, reflecting his work with radio broadcasts from 1960 to 1973. Also in the collection are sermons preached at various places from 1956–1985. Three tapes, made in 1983 and 1984, are of Bible Studies taught at the Clearbrook Church. There is little in the fonds that was created as a result of Regehr’s earlier years as a teacher.

Custodial history

The first two series of the Heinrich Regehr fonds, consisting primarily of transcripts of radio messages and programs, were donated to Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies approximately fifteen years ago by son Walter Regehr. The last series, consisting of Bible study and sermon notes was donated in March 1992 and the tapes were donated in 1995.
