Biographical sketch
Katie Peters was born in the village of Landskrone, Molotschna, south Russia. She lived through the Russian revolution and its horrible aftermath. In 1925 the family moved to Canada and settled on a farm at Grand Pointe, Manitoba. From 1930–1941 Katie worked in Winnipeg in at various jobs and related closely with the Mary-Martha Home.
After the Mennonite Brethren Bible College opened in 1948, she took evening courses. In 1962 due to health reasons she was forced to work in her home. She was self-employed working at sewing, typing and doing some book-keeping for a local business. She also took care of a few elderly ladies who needed constant care. While doing this work she realized she needed to keep her mind active and so began doing genealogy. First was a Peters book. Other books soon followed. By 1986 her genealogy collection consisted of 65,865 index cards and 600 binders of information, all collected in a short 15 years. She has donated most of the material to the Centre. The item listed below relates more to her own personal history, while the genealogy collection has become its own separate collection at the Centre.
Scope and content
This item in the Katie Peters collection consists of letters written by various people from 1925–1985 (with some gaps) who lived in Russia. They have been retyped and arranged by topic or by the author of the letter. All the letters are typed in the German language. The audio recording is an interview of Peters by Elfrieda Esau. The topic being discussed is the Girls Home in Winnipeg from 1920–1950.
Custodial history
It is unclear to how the recipients of the letters are connected to Katie Peters who retyped them. She donated the item in 1996 to the Centre. The audio tape was donated to the Centre after Esau’s project was done in 1987.
