Frank C. Peters (1920–1987)

Biographical sketch

Frank C. Peters was born in the Ukraine on July 5, 1920 to Cornelius Peters (1889–1973) and Katharina Hildebrand. Assumedly he immigrated with his parents in the 1920s to Canada and spent time in Herbert, Saskatchewan and Yarrow, British Columbia.

In 1947 he graduated with a B.A. from Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kansas. He continued his education earning doctorates in psychology and theology. He was heavily involved in church life and served the Kitchener Mennonite Brethren church from 1949–1954 and 1965–1973. He also pastored the Portage Avenue Mennonite Brethren Church in Winnipeg from 1980–1983. He was involved also in the larger church setting, serving as moderator of the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches from 1965–1969 and from 1975–1977 as moderator of the Canadian Mennonite Brethren Churches. He served on various committees and boards as well.

In addition to his church work he also was an educator. He taught at Waterloo Lutheran university in Waterloo, Ontario and served as president of Tabor College from 1954–1956. He was professor of theology and New Testament and later academic dean at Mennonite Brethren Bible College from 1957–1965. He became professor of psychology and the first president of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario from 1968–1978.

While he had an outstanding career he was also a family man. He married Melita Krause and together they had five children. He passed away on October 7, 1987.

Scope and content

The material in this collection contains three series based upon where the material is located in the Centre. 1) Articles about and by Peters 2) Papers and Essays 3) Audio Recordings.

The material consists primarily of material produced by Frank Peters in his role as pastor, educator, and conference worker. Peters did a lot of writing and speaking over the years, some of which is documented in a biographical list. Most of the material is in English; however some of the recordings are in German.

Custodial history


The materials in this collection have been collected over the years by the Centre’s staff and placed together in a Frank C. Peters collection. When all these pieces came is unknown.

The material in this series contains various publications written by Peters for the church. Other material includes a bibliography of Peter’s work, tributes and obituaries of Peters.

This series contains essays and papers written by Peters on various topics that relate to the church. Some include the role of women, education, and ethics. These papers have not been published.


3) Audio recordings. – 1947,1960,1963–1965,1974,1980. – 16 audio cassettes and 11 audio reels.

The material in this collection contain audio cassettes and reels of Peters’ presentations on various church related topics such as spiritual gifts, the Holy Spirt, conflict, and sermons. Some of the material is in German.
