Peter Penner (unknown– )

1928–1989; predominantly 1982–1984.
53 cm of textual records, four photographs, and five audio cassettes.

Biographical sketch

Peter Penner, professor of history at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick, has spent numerous years in several provinces working in Home Missions. He has written many articles for Mennonite publications, and is the author of several books, including Reaching the Unreached and No Longer at Arms Length. He is now retired and currently living in Calgary, Alberta.

Scope and content

This collection of material consists primarily of research conducted by Penner in preparation for the writing of his book No Longer at Arms Length: Mennonite Brethren Church Planting in Canada. It contains photocopies and some original documents that he collected for this project. Topical files and cards files are the primary material in this collection. Some correspondence and a questionnaire can also be found in the material. In addition to the textual material, there are five audio cassettes which record presentations Penner gave on topics such as Mennonites in Russia and the Church’s mission and outreach.

Custodial history

The material was collected by Peter Penner primarily in 1982–1984. After the book was finished he donated the material to the Centre on July 4, 1989. In August of the same year the rest of the files arrived and were incorporated into the collection (see file #25). The audio cassettes were deposited at an unknown time.
