Biographical sketch
Jakob Neufeld was born Feb. 23, 1906 in Gregorowka, Ukraine, Russia. As a youth he lived in Einlage, Chortitza where he joined the Mennonite Brethren Church. Neufeld moved to the Caucasus where he found work in a factory. Shortly after his first marriage, his wife died in childbirth and, as a result, Neufeld left the Caucasus and moved back to Chortitza.
At Schoenhorst, Chortitza, Neufeld remarried and lived with his second wife until the war broke out. Then, for 36 years, Jakob Neufeld was separated from his wife and daughter due to his exile in the Soviet union. In 1983 he came to Canada to be reunited with is wife and daughter. In his old age, he lived in Vineland, Ontario.
Scope and content
The Jakob Neufeld fonds consists of Jakob Neufeld’s life story and poetry, written by him, in the German language. An English translation of his story is also in this fonds.
Custodial history
Neufeld sent his work to Abe Schellenberg, editor of the Mennonitische Rundschau, in June of 1987. The biography, however, was not published in the Rundschau but a German version of it did appear in the Mennonitische Post.
