Biographical sketch
Heinrich A. Neufeld was born in the Old Colony, South Russia on May 3 1865. His parents died when he was young, and as a result, he had to made his home with other people who did not always treat him kindly. When he was eighteen, he accepted Christ, and was baptized and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church on Sept. 11 1883. He spent four years in the forestry alternative service.
On January 10 1891, Neufeld married Anna Martens. Soon after his marriage, he was ordained and subsequently worked both locally and in the itinerant ministry. On December 3, 1901, his first wife died, leaving him with four children. On Sept. 6 of the next year, he married Aganetha Dyck. In 1909 the Neufeld family left Russia for North America, where they made their home at Carpenter, South Dakota for two years. In May 1912, they moved to Herbert Saskatchewan.
Neufeld was always ready to help people in need; he made great efforts to provide relief to Mennonites in Russia and to help them emigrate. For many years, Neufeld was minister and leader of the Herbert Mennonite Brethren Church. Neufeld died on May 13, 1933.
Scope and content
The Heinrich A. Neufeld fonds consists of three sermon booklets created by Neufeld in the course of his ministry. Both the originals, in the Gothic script, and transliterated German versions are available in this fonds.
Custodial history
This material came from Victor Neufeld, grandson of Heinrich Neufeld, in 1988. At the request of Victor this material was returned to the family February 2007 after photo copies were made of the sermon books. Also returned were 5 books from the collection. In 2010 Harold Jantz donated a chart analyzing Neufeld's sermons.
