Biographical sketch
Jacob B. Janz was born on June 13, 1884, in Conteniusfeld, south Russia to Benjamin and Helena (Penner) Janz. His goal in life was to become a teacher which was realized when he was nineteen years old in Fischau and later he taught in Ohrloff. At the age of twenty four he was baptised into the Mennonite Brethren church. In 1908, he was married to Aganetha Wiens from Sparrau. Six children were born to this couple. He remained a teacher for twenty one years which was interrupted by the first World War. New regulations imposed by the Russian government did not allow him to continue in his profession and so he decided, as a landless family, it was best to move to Canada.
In 1924, the family immigrated to Canada and lived in southern Ontario. Here he could not find work as a teacher and therefore in 1927, moved to Coaldale, Alberta to take up farming. Here the family was also closer to family such as his brother B.B. Janz. In 1946, they retired from the farm and moved into the town of Coaldale. In December of 1946, Helena passed away. Jacob continued to live in Coaldale until his death on September 2, 1972.
