Biographical sketch
John J. Funk was born on March 28, 1897 in Nikolaital, South Russia. He took the necessary education to become a teacher but when the Revolution broke out, he was forced to change his plans.
On May 7 1922, he married Elsie Martens. In 1925, they came to Canada and settled in a Mennonite village south of Swift Current. In 1940 the Funks, with their family of eight children, moved to Elm Creek Manitoba where they farmed for 27 years after which they retired in Steinbach in 1967.
Following God’s call, Funk worked actively in the church preaching, leading the young people, teaching Sunday school and being a member in conference committees. Funk’s wife died in 1977 and he died on April 17, 1978.
Scope and content
The John J. Funk fonds consists of a register of the sermons he preached, which grew out of his active participation in the lay ministry. The booklet is in the German Gothic script. Also in this fonds are some genealogical materials. Other genealogical materials pertaining to Mrs. Funk’s father Franz W. Martens (originally in the John J. Funk fonds) have been moved to the Martens box of personal papers.
Custodial history
The John J. Funk fonds was donated by Neil Funk (son) of Elm Creek Manitoba in February, 1986.
