Biographical sketch
Henry D. Friesen, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth Friesen, was born in South Russia on February 19, 1880. He married Katharina Kornelsen in 1906. In 1913, they came to Canada where they lived in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and finally settled in Coaldale, Alberta in 1936. Friesen was well known for his German poetry. Friesen’s wife died in 1944. He spent his last years at the Baptist Haven of Rest, Medicine Hat, Alberta. Henry D. Friesen died on January 12, 1964.
Scope and content
The Henry D. Friesen fonds consists of photocopies of the poetry he created. The poetry is of a devotional nature and is written in the German language. A tape of Friesen’s poetry, recorded in 1954, is located in the CMBS tape collection. Also included in the fonds are papers of an autobiographical nature.
Custodial history
The Henry D. Friesen papers were donated by Daniel Rempel in 1985. At that time, no publication was to be done without Daniel Rempel’s authorization.
