Biographical sketch
David Balzer was born in 1877, to Jacob Balzer and Katherina Ediger (1847–1916) in the village of Schardau, Molotschna Colony, south Russia. In ca. 1903, he moved to the Terek Colony, village #2, where he served as an ordained member in the Kirchliche (larger) Mennonite church. During the First World War he worked for the International Red Cross. In 1918, he was killed by a soldier as he worked transporting wounded soldiers away from village #2, Chartsch. He left one wife, Maria, and eight children after he died. His wife married his brother, Daniel Balzer, who became step father for eight children. She died after five years of marriage of diabetes.
Scope and content
The material in this collection consists of a copy of a Pentecost sermon by David Balzer handwritten in the German Gothic script.
Custodial history
The material in this collection was donated to the Centre by Mrs. Katharina (Balzer) Esau of Winnipeg, Manitoba in March 1974. She was the oldest child of David and Maria Balzer.
