Administrative history
Prior to 1966 the Mennonite care homes and hospitals that existed in Canada were isolated from one another. In 1966 a meeting was held at Sargeant Ave. Mennonite Church, Winnipeg, Manitoba with regards to establishing fellowship among the individual institutions. The meeting was chaired by J. M Klassen, the executive secretary of Mennonite Central Committee Canada. The meeting resulted in the founding of the Canadian Association of Mennonite Hospitals and Homes. This was open to Mennonite institutions and to Mennonite individuals working in the health care field. The organization changed names in 1973 to Canadian Mennonite Health Assembly (CMHA). CMHA is a charitable organization that represents Mennonite institutions and health care agencies. They also support health care ministries by improving administration and encouraging the exchange of information between members. They annually have meetings to inform and inspire their members. These meetings have educational workshops, inspirational speakers, and provide an opportunity for fellowship between health care workers. Helmut Klassen has been a key volunteer in the organization and has been a member of the Executive committee from 1971 until 1984.
Scope and content
The records found in this collection consist of minutes and correspondence that deal with the executive of CMHA and the members. There are newsletters which show the general operation of CMHA and important changes in Mennonite health care institutions. The collection also contains reports and study papers that deal with health care effectiveness, ethics, and administration in relationship to the church and Christian principals. There are two tapes of an inspirational speaker at an annual meeting, and one tape of an inter-Mennonite Rally.
Custodial history
The custodial history of this fonds is unclear; however, significant amounts of correspondence and minutes in the records are connected to Helmut Klassen and may have been acquired from his collection.
