Administrative history

The Ontario Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches was founded in 1932 in New Hamburg. Mennonites arrived in southern Ontario from Russia beginning in 1924. These Russian immigrants worshiped with their host Mennonite families, mainly in the Waterloo County area. However, language and cultural differences, and their growing numbers led them to worship separately from their hosts. Again, differences brought with them from their Russian church divisions, eventually led them to form different worship groupings, one of these being the Mennonite Brethren. By the time of the founding of the conference, Mennonite Brethren congregations had been formed in New Hamburg, Hespeler, Kitchener, Vineland, and Leamington. These were joined by Port Rowan (1933), Virgil (1937), and St. Catharines (1943). From these beginnings the conference has become involved in many areas of church work.

The emphasis on missions began nearly at the beginning. The congregations wanted to serve in their communities. In 1944 the work began in particular to reach out to children with Bible schools for them. These were begun that year in the Vineland and Virgil areas. Over the next twenty years this expanded to many parts of southern Ontario. From this effort also began the work to establish new congregations, the first being in the Coldwater area in 1951. Later other congregations were begun in many parts of the province including the major urban areas around Toronto and Hamilton. Others were in the more rural areas of the province and these were generally more stable and had more potential for growth in the years up to the 1980s. The work in Toronto and Hamilton remained unstable but the expansion of congregations in Kitchener/Waterloo and St. Catharines continued apace. Other missions efforts were begun in Ottawa, London, west of Sudbury, and Windsor. Women’s missionary conventions were also organized in the 1960s to give a forum for women to discuss and contribute to missions, with the emphasis on foreign missions.

Education was a major effort of the conference. A Bible school was begun in Virgil in 1938 and a Bible School society was formed in 1939 with Vineland. It started as an evening school and became a day school in 1943 in Niagara-on-the-Lake. With the purchase of a property in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1944 a high school was added in 1945. In 1948 the conference took over the society work in both the high school and Bible school. The Bible school remained on this property with the high school until 1955 when it moved to the Kitchener MB Church education building. The Bible school was discontinued in 1965. There were also student services offered to university students at many universities in southern Ontario.

The high school was renamed Eden Christian College after the Bible school programme was moved to Kitchener. The course offerings and facilities expanded over the years. For a number of years both the 4-year and 5-year streams were offered. In some subject areas a student could complete their grade 13 requirements. The core emphasis of Christian values in a Mennonite context were maintained.

Camping is a major effort which began with children at the high school and Bible school in Niagara-on-the-Lake. From there it expanded to various rented facilities when all the children could no longer be accommodated in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Finally a new camp property was purchased in 1980 which has been developed for camping and other conference retreat needs.

Vacation Bible School was an early programme of outreach to the community. Soon after WWII programmes were begun in the communities immediately in the proximity of the MB congregations. It then expanded over the years to both rural and urban areas. It was an outlet for the youth of the congregations to get involved in an important mission of the church.

Youth had other programmes for them. Conventions and symposia were held on pertinent topics. With the number of students increasing and staying students for a longer period of time a student services work was begun in the late 1960s. The majority of these students were in secular universities. Newsletters were published and meetings were held to provide support and forums for discussion and understanding of the issues facing these students.

Sunday school and music programmes were carried on throughout the Ontario conference history. Both local endeavours and provincial ‘fests’ and symposia were held to foster efforts in Christian education and the fine arts.

Senior citizen housing and institutional care was a programme of the conference begun in the 1960s. The site was next to one of the congregations in St. Catharines. It started as a small facility and expanded to offer beds for a spectrum of needs. Plans also called for additional facilities in Virgil and Kitchener. Tabor Manor is now a well established institution in Ontario governed by the conference.

Bethesda Home was begun by the Wiebe couple from Vineland who had worked in a similar institution already in Russia in the Mennonite colonies there. They began in a private effort that was eventually taken over by the conference. It has expanded to have a large staff and over 100 residents with major government support and regulation. It has been an institution both under the Canadian conference and the Ontario conference. It was founded as a private institution in 1932, then was taken over by the Ontario conference in 1937, and in 1947 it was transferred to the Canadian conference. In 1983 it was transferred back to the Ontario conference.
