Administrative history
The beginning of the River East Mennonite Brethren Church, in Winnipeg, started when Jacob Ens befriended some Japanese families in Winnipeg. He began seperate Sunday School classes for the children because they did not know German which was the language of all the MB Churches in the area. The classes grew and soon the parents were requesting that worship services be held as well. Services were held in a school. In 1962, the leadership committee was asked if it was possible to organize a church. Many people involved were part of the North Kildonan MB Church. Five couples from this church were released to organize a new congregation. In 1963, the congregation had a chartering service and renamed themselves the Springfield Heights MB Church. In 1964, Sunday School was held in the school for the last time before moving to their new building. To avoid confusion with the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church, the name changed to River East Mennonite Brethren Church.

The leaders of the church included: Ernest A. Isaac (1965–1973), John B. Epp (1976–1987), Norm Neufeld (1988–1990), Karen Heidebrecht Thiessen (1990–2000), Christine Longhurst (2000–2006), Jerry Derksen (2001- ), Mary Anne Isaak (2011- ).

The language of worship is English.

Scope and content
This fonds consists of the annual and financial reports, minutes from the church council, board of ministers and stewards, the deacons, Christian Education, Ladies Fellowship, and various other committees, constitutions, crusade information, bulletins, and miscellaneous records.

Custodial history
Some of the records were microfilmed in 1978 through the work of the Historical Commission of the Mennonite Brethren Conference. Other records were donated by the church. From 1995–present the records from the church are donated yearly as a group. These are not divided by committee as done in the past, but filed as yearly minutes. More textual and visual documents were added to the collection from the church in 2006 and 2010.
