The Word Guild held a black-tie gala June 2008 to celebrate their 20th annual awards ceremony recognizing the best writing by Canadian Christian authors. Former Herald columnist John H. Redekop was among the 38 winners recognized in 31 categories from more than 230 entries, for his article on political commentator Lloyd Mackey.

Evangelism isn’t restricted to real life anymore. An online virtual world called Second Life allows members to create an avatar (virtual identity) to interact with other online characters, be it chatting, investing, or partying – even going to church. Some 100 churches are listed in Second Life; some as a joke, but others as sincere evangelistic attempts.

Modern worship music is unofficially 10 years old this year. The recording industry’s movement toward modern worship music began with The Cutting Edge collection by Delirious and has spawned new Christian artists like Chris Tomlin and David Crowder Band. But Christian Music Today’s Russ Breimeier says, “it’s going nowhere.” Though it has reached mainstream status in churches, creativity has stagnated and songs are becoming formulaic.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers expanded the online naming system to include suffixes such as “.xxx” and “.sex.” Businesses can choose the suffix for their internet addresses after a decision Thursday to expand choices beyond staples such as “.com,” “.co,” and “.org.” Applications will be accepted next year, with new domain names costing at least $100,000.
