Sally Lloyd-Jones tells the key stories of the Bible as the progress of one grand story – God’s “Great Rescue” because of God’s “Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love.” Jesus is always anticipated or in view: as the subtitle states, “every story whispers his name.” Lloyd-Jones’ storytelling style is perfect for children, and the illustrations by Jago are delightful. The deluxe edition includes the book on three CDs, as read by British actor David Suchet, perhaps more suitable for somewhat older children who can follow the written text or simply enjoy the audio version.—DD

This book tells the story of the author’s parents, Jake and Mary Harder, who spent their growing-up years in Russia, immigrated to Canada as young adults, and lived as a family in Alberta (Linden and Coaldale), then B.C. (Yarrow and Abbotsford.) Written especially for family and friends, the book contains a great deal of detail that may also interest those in communities where the Harders lived. Unlike their parents, the Harder children have affiliated with non-Mennonite churches of various kinds, and thus illustrate changing identity formation over generations. Jake and Mary also changed, Harder writes, but, as the title suggests, “remained mostly Mennonite.”—DD
