Christian rock band Starfield had a successful night at the Gospel Music Association Canada’s Covenant Awards Oct. 24, taking home awards for Praise and Worship Song of the Year, Modern Worship Album of the Year, Recorded Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Group of the Year, and Artist of the Year. Adam Padfield of Ontario won Inspirational Song of the Year for “Trust,” and Family Life Network artists Amanda Falk and Fresh I.E. took home Song of the Year in their respective categories.

Ernst Janzen’s work on conflict and peacemaking, Conflitos: Oportunidade ou Perigo? was selected by the Association of Christian Editors in Brazil as the best book in the counselling category for 2007. Janzen is a member of the faculty at Faculdade Fidelis, and an MB pastor in Curitiba, Brazil. He holds two master’s degrees from Brazil and Fresno Pacific University.

A University of Toronto sociology professor interviewed 1,800 Americans in a groundbreaking study examining the link between levels of religious belief and a sense of personal
control. The study surprisingly revealed that individuals who believe God’s will influences outcomes in everyday life and who actively participate in religious rituals report a higher sense of personal control than those who are not devoted to praying or attending services.

Human Rights Watch’s International Film Festival aims to use the power of film to connect the experiences of survivors and activists with people’s everyday experience to inspire a new generation of human rights activists. A collection of films from the group’s New York and London festivals will travel around North America September 2008 through May 2009. They can be licensed for viewing for $250 per title.

The Bavarian village of Oberammergau, Germany will present the Passion Play for the 41st time, for 102 days beginning in May 2010. Enduring suffering from the Thirty Years’ War, and many deaths from the plague, the residents of the village vowed in 1633 to perform “the play of the suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ” every 10 years if they were spared from extinction. More than 2,000 participants will bring the story of Jesus of Nazareth on an open air stage in a five-hour presentation.
